THE MAINS FAMILY

Meet the Mains

We are building the supportive, inclusive community our own family once sought for Bryce and others like her.

Meet Tye, Arlene, and their daughters, Brooklyn, Alexis, and Bryce. Relocating from Northern Virginia to Maryland's Eastern Shore, our family brought a vision fueled by our own life path. We are dedicated to building a hopeful community where every individual is cherished and belongs. We welcome you.

Bryce Mains

Bryce is our guiding light. Though she is autistic and sometimes finds it hard to communicate with words, she has so much to say. She is a musical artist who loves to laugh and brings joy to everything she does.

Alpine & Friends

Alpine and our family pets provide the unconditional comfort and play that every home needs. They are the quiet support system that reminds us to slow down and find peace in simple moments.

Dear Friend,

Thank you for being here.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about how to write this letter because the truth is that Imagine isn't really something I can explain with a mission statement or a list of services. To understand why it exists, you first have to understand where it came from.

I'm a mother. My youngest daughter, Bryce, is profoundly autistic and limited functional speech, and like so many families, our lives have been shaped by both the beauty and the challenges that come with loving someone who experiences the world differently. Raising Bryce has changed me in ways I never could have anticipated. She has taught me patience, perspective, resilience, and a kind of unconditional love that reaches into every corner of your life.

Along the way, I've met countless families who carry many of the same hopes and fears that I do. We celebrate milestones that other people might not notice. We learn systems we never expected to navigate. We become advocates, researchers, planners, and protectors. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, many of us carry the same quiet question in our hearts: What happens next?

Not just next year. Not just after graduation. But ten, twenty, or thirty years from now. What opportunities will exist for our loved ones? Where will they belong? Who will understand them? Who will continue building a world that sees their value and creates space for them to thrive?

Those questions have stayed with me for a long time.

What I've come to realize is that many of the services, opportunities, and programs that exist today were created because parents refused to accept that there wasn't a better way. Parents have always been the people pushing this movement forward. They have opened doors, challenged systems, built organizations, created programs, and imagined possibilities long before anyone else could see them.

I think that's why this vision has never left me.

There is a belief that has guided me for years: if you can see something in your mind and feel it in your heart, it may have been placed there for a reason. Some ideas are fleeting, but others stay with you. They return over and over again. They grow roots. They ask something of you. I have come to believe those ideas are seeds, and our responsibility is not to ignore them but to nurture them and help bring them into the world.

Imagine has always felt like one of those seeds.

At its heart, this organization exists because I believe we can do better. I believe there are still gaps that need to be filled, bridges that need to be built, and families who deserve more support than they currently receive. I believe there are teachers, businesses, neighbors, volunteers, and community leaders who want to help create a more inclusive world but simply need a place to come together and do it.

There is a phrase I come back to often: The world was not built for our children, so let's create a world that is.

For us, that journey begins with respite.

When people hear the word respite, they often think of a service. I think of something much more personal. I think of rest. Real rest. The kind of rest that caregivers rarely allow themselves to ask for. The kind of rest that gives you space to breathe, reconnect with yourself and your family, and remember that you matter too. It is peace of mind. It is knowing your loved one is safe, valued, included, and cared for. It is a gift that every family deserves.

We are starting with respite because it is one of the greatest needs I hear from families again and again. But this is not where the vision ends. It is where it begins.

My hope is that Imagine grows alongside the needs of the community. That we continue listening. That we continue learning. That we continue building. Whether that means creating new programs, expanding opportunities, supporting families in different ways, or helping fill needs we haven't even identified yet, I want Imagine to remain rooted in the people it serves.

I don't have all the answers. In many ways, I'm still asking the same questions that so many other parents are asking. But I do have hope. I have faith in what can happen when people come together around a shared purpose. I have faith in the power of community. And I have faith that when enough people believe in something, what once seemed impossible can become real.

If you've found your way here, whether you're a parent, caregiver, educator, volunteer, donor, business owner, or community member, I hope you'll join us. Not because I have a perfect plan, but because I believe the future is something we build together.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Thank you for believing in possibility. And thank you for helping us create a world where every person is seen, valued, included, and given the opportunity to belong.
